In 1967, a handful of locals started the Heritage Foundation because downtown Franklin was quietly on its way to being torn down. They saved the Franklin Theatre. They saved pieces of the battlefield. They saved the Old, Old Jail. Block by block, for almost sixty years, they refused to let this street become an exit off I-65.
Forty years ago they started throwing a Christmas party on the Main Street they rescued. Last December, Dickens of a Christmas pulled roughly 110,000 people onto that one street — Middle Tennessee's largest outdoor Christmas festival, about 200 vendors from 1st Avenue down to 5 Points, Scrooge and Tiny Tim and snow on the courthouse.
